Audi R8 e-tron back on track, could be launched next year

Postby BMW » December 20th, 2013, 8:31 pm

Could have a range of approximately 400 km (248 miles)

Audi originally planned to launch the R8 e-tron in 2012 but the model was delayed indefinitely because they were "concerned about the limited range of pure electric cars with existing battery technology."

Fast forward to today and a new report is indicating the car is back on track thanks to advances in lithium-ion battery technology and changes in the company's research and development department.

Citing company insiders, Drive is the reporting an updated R8 e-tron will go into limited production in late 2014. Little is known about the model but it will reportedly feature a new battery pack that will enable the car to travel approximately 400 km (248 miles) on a single charge. For comparison, the original R8 e-tron had an estimated range of just 215 km (134 miles).

It remains unclear if the car will feature carryover components but the previous model had two electric motors that developed a combined output of 381 HP (280 kW) and 820 Nm (605 lb-ft) of torque. This enabled the car to accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 4.2 seconds and hit an electronically limited top speed of 200 km/h (124 mph)
