Japan's BMW i8?

Mazda CEO Masa-michi Kogai recently dismissed rumors of a new rotary engine but a report is indicating the company is working an RX-8 successor.

According to What Car's sources, Mazda is developing a new sports car that uses a plug-in hybrid powertrain that consists of an electric motor and a range-extending rotary engine. Little else is known about the car but the magazine says it will likely be a range-topping, rear-wheel drive two-seater.

We're taking everything with a grain of salt but the publication says the car could be launched before 2018.
